Lithuanian Border Guards Detain 11 Migrants at Belarus Border

Lithuanian border guards detained 11 migrants attempting to cross the border from Belarus. The incident took place on Friday in the Švenčionys District.

According to the State Border Guard Service, the attempted crossing near the settlement of Ataukai was detected using surveillance cameras. The migrants were assisted by two individuals on the Belarusian side. One of them cut through coils of barbed wire and damaged the border fence, allowing the group to pass through. The second acted as a lookout. After the migrants crossed into Lithuanian territory, both помощники fled back into Belarus. Lithuanian officials believe the individuals may be linked to Belarusian services.

Search teams, supported by dog units and a border guard helicopter, were deployed to locate the migrants. All were detained. The group consisted of individuals aged 21 to 26: five citizens of Pakistan, five of Afghanistan, and one of Iran. Seven had identification documents, while the others did not.

The migrants were returned from Lithuania after being provided with humanitarian packages containing food and basic necessities.

Since the beginning of the year, Lithuanian border guards have recorded 76 attempts to cross the border illegally.
