Lithuania to Propose EU Sanctions Over EHU Being Declared an “Extremist Organization”

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys intends to call on European Union countries to unequivocally condemn the decision by Belarus’ Supreme Court to declare the European Humanities University an “extremist organization”. A meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council is due to take place in Luxembourg today.

“Lithuania’s foreign minister will make a statement regarding the situation surrounding the European Humanities University – after Belarus declared the institution an ‘extremist organization’ on April 14, the minister intends to draw attention to the consequences of this decision at the European level and call on the EU to take a response”, Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry said.

As the ministry clarified to ELTA news agency, this could include sanctions against Belarusian officials involved in the decision regarding EHU. In addition, Budrys will call for additional financial and political support for EHU.
