According to Pujāts, the unidentified individuals stole two surveillance cameras, but everything possible is already being done to restore the infrastructure.
He believes the masked men may not have been representatives of Belarusian state services, but members of organized crime groups involved in smuggling migrants with the approval of Belarusian authorities.
Pujāts also noted that this year there have been twice as few cases of damage to the border fence as last year.
The Latvian military previously reported a provocation on the Belarus-Latvia border this week. Armed masked men drove a group of at least 20 migrants toward the Latvian border and threatened Latvian military personnel.
The attempt to cross the border was stopped, but several hours later the masked men entered Latvian territory, damaged a distribution cabinet, stole cameras and fled back into Belarus before Latvian border guards arrived.
