The opening of two border crossings between Poland and Belarus has been postponed for several weeks, Polish Interior and Administration Minister Marcin Kierwiński said on the Polish Radio program “Signals of the Day.”
“Over the past two years, Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government has significantly strengthened the border, and the process of illegal migration along the Polish-Belarusian border is now under control. That’s the first point. Secondly, we already have open border crossings with Belarus in the Lublin Voivodeship. Some time ago, the Prime Minister again spoke about opening new border crossings, this time in the Podlaskie Voivodeship.
And we would probably have done this much earlier if not for the fact that Lithuania is simultaneously closing its crossings with Belarus. The Lithuanians are our partners, and we are in contact with them. I spoke with the deputy interior minister both during yesterday’s meeting in Gdańsk and again today by phone. We support the Lithuanians in this decision. Therefore, the opening of the crossings in the Podlaskie Voivodeship is being delayed by several weeks, but the decision has been made,” he said.
According to Kierwiński, there is no exact date yet for the reopening.
Deputy Minister Czesław Mroczek also confirmed today that the Polish side will coordinate its border-opening actions with Lithuanian partners.
On Tuesday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that the Kuźnica crossing (closed since 2021) and the Bobrowniki crossing (closed since 2023) would reopen in November for a trial period. However, on Wednesday, the Lithuanian government decided to close its border with Belarus until November 30, allowing only certain categories of people to cross through the Medininkai checkpoint. Members of the Lithuanian government said they expected a coordinated response from Poland.
