Kazakhstan has restricted vehicles from entering and leaving its territory to no more than once per day. The measure was introduced to prevent fuel from being taken out of the country, Kazakh Deputy Energy Minister Kaiyrkhan Tutkyshbayev said at a briefing on July 7.
“The relevant measures have been introduced. We have prohibited both freight and passenger vehicles from crossing the border more than once [per day — Reform.news]. This applies to all countries bordering Kazakhstan. These measures allow us to maintain the balance of fuel and lubricants that we have established,” Tutkyshbayev said.
Tutkyshbayev said fuel consumption had risen sharply in Kazakhstan’s border regions with Russia, but added that there is currently no fuel shortage on the domestic market overall.
According to the deputy minister, Kazakhstan’s law enforcement agencies have begun cracking down on the illegal export of fuel from the country.
The measures come amid fuel shortages in Russia caused by Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries.
