Investigators Reveal Cause of February St. Petersburg–Minsk Bus Crash

The Investigative Committee has completed its probe into a February road accident involving a MAZ bus operating on the St. Petersburg–Minsk route.

On February 5, the 48-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle on a curve in the Rossony District. The bus veered off the road and overturned, leaving a 63-year-old passenger with serious injuries.

According to the Investigative Committee, a technical examination found that “the bus’s ABS system was malfunctioning, which made it impossible to change the vehicle’s trajectory during emergency braking.” At the time of the crash, the bus was traveling at around 99 km/h.

The driver has been charged under Part 2 of Article 317 of the Criminal Code (“Violation of traffic rules and vehicle operation by a driver resulting in serious bodily injury through negligence”).

“The materials concerning the release of a faulty bus into service have been separated from the main criminal case and sent to the Minsk police for further review,” the Committee added.
