The film “Under the Grey Sky” by Belarusian director Maryna Tamkovich has been nominated for the European Discovery – Prix FIPRESCI of the European Film Academy.
The nomination highlights a story dedicated to the issue of political prisoners in Belarus. In her statement, the director addressed imprisoned journalists Katsyaryna Andreyeva and Ihar Ilyash:
“Words cannot begin to describe the pride and joy… Katsyaryna Andreyeva, Ihar Ilyash — you are not alone. You have not been forgotten.”
The film was inspired by the story of Katsyaryna and Ihar.
The nomination for the FIPRESCI Prize (the International Federation of Film Critics) is one of the most significant for debut filmmakers. It confirms both the artistic level of the film and its public relevance.
The film was produced with the support of the Polish Film Institute. The intimate drama features Belarusian actors Alyaksandra Vaitsiahovich and Valyantsin Navapolski, as well as a strong international team, including Polish cinematographer Krzysztof Trela.
Only this past weekend, Mary Tamkovich’s feature debut received another award — the “Golden Elephant” at a film festival in Sicily.
Since its world premiere in New York at the Tribeca Festival, the film has received numerous festival invitations and achieved considerable success. It has been released in Poland, screened repeatedly in Italy and the United Kingdom, and received predominantly positive reviews from critics.
“Thank you and congratulations to everyone who contributed to the creation of the film,” the Belarusian filmmaker said.
The 38th European Film Awards ceremony will take place on 17 January in Berlin.
