Figures in “Spirit of Rus” Case Added to Belarus Extremists List

The Interior Ministry has added another 33 people to the “List of Citizens of the Republic of Belarus, Foreign Nationals or Stateless Persons Involved in Extremist Activity”.

As noted by the Viasna Human Rights Centre, those added to the list include 19-year-olds Viachaslau Bandarchuk, Uladzislau Varonin and Artsiom Aliferovich. The KGB had claimed that they were involved in the “extremist formation” Spirit of Rus.

Also added were Artur Katovich, 16-year-old Yury Kandratsenka, and Ruslan Nazarchuk, whose age was not specified.

The list now contains 6,353 names.

Belarusian authorities regularly use extremism charges to suppress political opponents and dissent more broadly.
