The EU’s lead spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy, Christian Wigand, welcomed the release of 25 political prisoners in Belarus, stressing that more than 800 remain imprisoned.
“Today, 25 political prisoners were released as a result of US efforts. We welcome this step. 800+ individuals remain arbitrarily detained in appalling conditions. Belarus’ regime should release all political prisoners, immediately and unconditionally,” Wigand wrote on X.
Today, following talks between John Coale and Aliaksandr Lukashenka, 25 people were released. They were taken from Belarus to Lithuania. In exchange, the United States will lift sanctions on Bellesbumprom and Lakokraska. Coale also said that the release of political prisoners and the lifting of sanctions will continue.
