The European Union has imposed sanctions on Oleg Novitsky, a Russian cosmonaut born in Belarus.

The reason for the personal sanctions was Novitsky’s participation in elections to the State Duma, which were also held in the occupied territories of Ukraine. Novitsky was subsequently elected to the State Duma. He ran for the Communist Party of the Russian Federation in the Bratsk single-member constituency No. 98 in Irkutsk Region and also headed regional group No. 6 on the party’s federal candidate list. This regional group includes territories of Ukraine occupied by Russia.

Earlier today, the EU imposed sanctions on more than 1,600 legal entities and individuals linked to Russia’s military-industrial complex, as well as on new members of the State Duma.
