Specialists from the State Forensic Examination Committee helped a woman from Brest establish the identity of her mother, who was buried abroad.

The woman turned to forensic experts to establish the identity of a person buried in a neighbouring country. She had spent years searching for her mother’s grave in order to confirm the burial site and arrange for the remains to be reburied in Belarus.

She managed to locate what was believed to be the grave, but a metal memorial plaque with an inscription had deteriorated over the years due to corrosion and exposure to natural elements. Most of the information had become almost illegible, making it impossible to reliably confirm the identity of the woman buried there.

Specialists from the Brest Region Department of the State Forensic Examination Committee conducted a technical examination of the details on the plaque. Using special methods to restore faint records, they managed to recover the information despite significant damage to the plaque’s surface. The experts established the person’s surname, first name and patronymic, as well as her dates of birth and death.

The information obtained confirmed that the grave found was indeed the grave of the Brest woman’s mother. The woman will now be able to continue the process of arranging for her mother’s remains to be reburied in Belarus, the State Forensic Examination Committee reported.
