Brest Customs has opened a criminal case against a passenger travelling in a Peugeot car who arrived from France and allegedly attempted to illegally bring more than $72,000 in cash, or the equivalent amount, into Belarus.

The woman told a customs inspector that she was carrying only personal belongings and about $1,500 in cash. The actual amount was discovered during a subsequent inspection of her belongings.

A criminal case has been opened under Part 2 of Article 228 of the Criminal Code. The offence carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison. The cash has been seized pending a court decision, the Belarusian Customs Committee said.
