BelRAO Shows Renderings of Future Radioactive Waste Repository

A working meeting was held at the state enterprise BelRAO with the participation of designers from RUP BELNIPIENERGOPROM, devoted to architectural and planning solutions and the concept of a future radioactive waste disposal facility. Reporting on the event, BelRAO published a video with renderings of the planned site.

As BelRAO director Dzmitry Lohvin stated, the main task is “to ensure the complete isolation of radioactive waste from the environment.”

“Our task is to create a facility that guarantees the complete isolation of radioactive waste from the environment. We strive for maximum transparency: people should see and understand exactly how the protective barriers work and why the solutions we have chosen meet the strictest global safety standards,” he said.

The construction site has not yet been determined. Three options had previously been mentioned: territory near the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Astravets, sites in Mahilyow Region, and areas of the Polesie State Radiation-Ecological Reserve near the borders with Lithuania, Russia, and Ukraine. It was reported that the construction of the facility would require an area of about one square kilometer.
