The five-member Belarusian team Belswimsisters has become the first Belarusian women’s team in history to swim across the English Channel in a relay, covering a distance of 52 kilometers in 13 hours and 50 minutes.
Although the narrowest point of the Channel is about 33 kilometers wide, strong currents increased the actual swimming distance to 52 kilometers. The relay was completed without wetsuits in the cold open sea. Each swimmer spent one hour in the water before being replaced by the next teammate. A support boat accompanied the swimmers throughout the crossing, with the captain monitoring compliance with the rules and the participants’ health.
The team consisted of Darya Slizh and Marya Kolesava-Hudzilina from Vilnius, Maryna Shynkarenka from London, and Ulyana Zarubina and Alena Hryhoryeva from the United States.
