Belarusian Sentenced In Absentia To Four Years For Messages About Prosecutor’s Assistant

The Mahilyow Regional Court on March 3 issued an in absentia verdict against Artsiom Shabuneu, sentencing him to four years in a penal colony. He was also fined 100 base units (4,500 rubles), the human rights center Viasna reported.

Shabuneu was charged with inciting hatred (Article 130 of the Criminal Code), violence or threats of violence against a law enforcement officer (Article 364), violence or threats of violence against an official (Article 366), and insulting a representative of authority (Article 369).

The trial in absentia began on February 27. Physical evidence in the case included eight screenshots of messages in Viber, 10 screenshots of pages containing information about the senior assistant to the prosecutor of Homyel, Andrei Sidarenka, in the Telegram channel “Dzikaje Paliavanne,” and three messages sent to Sidarenka in Viber.

The court ordered Shabuneu to pay Sidarenka 1,500 rubles in compensation. Shabuneu’s 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer has also been seized.
