Belarusian Railways To Receive State Support

Belarusian Railways will receive state support, Valery Verenich, the head of the railway, said following a meeting with Aleksandr Lukashenko. According to him, the measure involves extending the repayment period for existing loans.

Verenich noted that Aleksandr Lukashenko ultimately endorsed the proposals contained in the draft directive.

“This places certain obligations on the staff of Belarusian Railways and is meant to mobilize efforts in all directions. There are enough areas of work to achieve in the near future the results we plan and have included in our business strategies,” he said, as reported by BelTA.

The head of Belarusian Railways added that the company had not requested new funds, only an extension of the repayment term for previously taken loans.

“There is a certain amount that must be repaid within five years. This is a very heavy financial burden for us,” he explained.

According to him, the repayment term will be extended for another five years, until 2035. As a result, Belarusian Railways will free up funds that can be invested in repairs, infrastructure, and development. The loans were previously taken to purchase rolling stock and for electrification projects.
