Belarusian Part of Belovezhskaya Pushcha Counts 784 Bison

The annual bison census has been completed in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. As of January 1, 2026, specialists counted 784 individuals — 58 more than a year earlier.

The majority of the animals are adult females — 425 individuals, or 54.2% of the population. Adult males number 130 (16.6%), juveniles aged between 1.5 and 3.5 years — 139 individuals (17.7%), and calves under one year old — 90 (11.5%).

The largest group is located in the southern part of the forest — 263 individuals. In the north-eastern part, 178 bison are concentrated, while 184 individuals are counted in the south-western herd on the territory of the Kamianiec District BSSR Hunting Society. Another 82 animals from a separated part of the southern herd live in the Pruzhany District BSSR Hunting Society, while 69 bison are found in the northern part of the forest. Eight animals are kept in excursion enclosures.

The census was conducted in January–February by staff of the scientific department and the ranger service of the national park, the park’s press service reported.

It was reported earlier that in February the results of the annual bison census in Poland’s Białowieża National Park were announced. As of December 31 last year, 1,176 bison were recorded in the Polish part of Belovezhskaya Pushcha, including 176 calves according to the data.
