During comprehensive command-and-staff exercises conducted by the Interior Ministry in the Homiel Region, law enforcement officers and Interior Troops personnel practiced responses to various scenarios involving an escalation of the situation in an urban environment. Interior Minister Ivan Kubrakou monitored the actions of the participants.
One of the tasks was to detain a group of people who had blocked a roadway. According to the scenario, one of the participants blocked the road with a vehicle and broadcast footage from a drone. Traffic police officers, special police unit (OMON) personnel and fighters from the Buran special operations unit detained the participants, including the drone operator, after which traffic was restored..
Another scenario involved searching for and detaining six armed people who had taken shelter in a railway station building. After reconnaissance, the facility was cordoned off. OMON personnel and Buran fighters found the people in the waiting hall and handed them over to a convoy.
The exercises also included a scenario involving the rescue of two female train conductors who, according to the exercise scenario, had been taken hostage and held in a sleeper carriage. The train and adjacent area were cordoned off, after which operational combat groups stormed the carriage using pyrotechnic devices and freed the hostages.
Under another scenario, five armed people seized an administrative building and held an official and employees of an enterprise hostage. The simulated perpetrators took shelter in an assembly hall without windows or lighting. Assault teams, supported by blocking units, snipers and armored vehicles, entered the building and used night-vision devices to clear the room. The hostages were unharmed.
The exercises also included practicing the detection and destruction of sabotage and reconnaissance groups. The Interior Ministry said the need to improve such tactics had been identified following an inspection of the 7th Separate Special Police Brigade by the State Secretariat of the Security Council.
