Belarusian Citizens Detained in Georgia With Methadone Worth Over $1 Million

Two Belarusian citizens have been detained in the Adjara region in a drug trafficking case. Nearly six kilograms of methadone were seized from the suspects, with its black market value estimated at up to 3 million lari (more than $1.1 million).

According to Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, the operation was carried out by officers of the Adjara Central Criminal Police Department. The detainees — Belarusian citizens born in 1992 and 1993 — are suspected of illegal acquisition, storage on an especially large scale, and facilitating the distribution of narcotic substances.

During searches of the suspects’ personal belongings, their vehicle, and temporary places of residence, law enforcement officers found methadone prepared for sale, as well as materials used for packaging drugs. All seized items have been recognized as material evidence.

The investigation is being conducted under Articles 260 and 260-1 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which provide for penalties of up to 20 years in prison or life imprisonment.
