“We received two vessels and handled them successfully using our unique technology — 100,000 tons were transshipped. We do not position ourselves as an alternative to other ports, but we are a separate enterprise and are ready to cooperate with any partners in the future. If, during negotiations, we understand that it works well for the Belarusians and that we are comfortable working with you, then why not continue cooperating?” Andrei Riznichenko, production director at the Murmansk Commercial Seaport, told BelTA.
According to him, a technology for handling Belarusian potash was developed promptly.
“The organization of potash fertilizer shipments through Murmansk became an example of a comprehensive logistics solution for NTK. We established not simply the delivery of cargo to the port, but a technology for the full turnaround of specialized railcars: after unloading the potash, the rolling stock is loaded on its return trip with raw materials from the Murmansk Region. This reduces non-revenue mileage, increases the economic efficiency of transportation and confirms that the Murmansk route is ready for sustainable work with large export flows,” he added.
The construction of a Belarusian terminal in Murmansk continues to face the problem of the railway’s freight capacity.
“While this strategic task is being addressed, we need to consider the possibility of using the existing infrastructure,” said Artyom Kuksa, first deputy minister for the development of the Arctic and the economy of the Murmansk Region.
Pre-project preparations for the initiative are currently under way. The construction of the Belarusian port is being linked to the comprehensive reconstruction of the entire Murmansk transport hub.
“It is precisely the comprehensive project for the development of the Arctic and the region’s economy that could solve this problem not only for Belarusian cargo, but for cargo flows to Murmansk in general,” the first deputy minister said.
The location for the future Belarusian port has already been determined — the western shore of Kola Bay.
