Belarus Customs Threatens Lithuania With Confiscation of Stranded Trucks

The State Customs Committee has commented on the decision concerning Lithuanian carriers’ trucks, which was announced earlier this morning by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The vehicles will be moved to designated parking areas, and the drivers will be allowed to leave.

The State Border Committee has temporarily suspended the release of vehicles from Belarus since 9 a.m.

“To eliminate unsafe conditions on the access roads to the checkpoints ‘Šalčininkai’ and ‘Medininkai’, which were closed by the Lithuanian side, more than 1,100 trucks with Lithuanian registration that had continued to wait along the roads for the border to reopen are now being relocated on the Belarusian side to specially equipped areas. The vehicles will be parked near the checkpoints ‘Kamenny Loh’, ‘Berastavitsa’, ‘Benyakoni’, and ‘Katlouka’,” the committee said.

The customs authority emphasized that the trucks will be able to leave only after Lithuania fully reopens the border. It also warned that “measures provided for by law” could be applied.

“If Lithuania continues its unfriendly policy and fails to accommodate Lithuanian carriers, the Belarusian side has the right to apply measures provided for by law to these vehicles. The trucks will be able to leave the parking sites only after the Lithuanian side fully resumes traffic through the Belarusian-Lithuanian section of the border,” the statement said.
