Another 16 People Recognized as Political Prisoners in Belarus

Belarusian human rights defenders have recognized another 16 people as political prisoners: Alena Arshanskaya, Raman Basalai, Maksim Bialkevich, Viktar Huryn, Dzmitry Zamirau, Maksim Kupreichyk, Viktoryia Liaukouskaya, Valery Melnikau, Larysa Novikava, Andrei Slesarenka, Hennadz Tarynski, Yury Filamenka, Palina Fralova, Aliaksandr Chukovich, Vadzim Zharabilau and Dzianis Holubeu.

They are facing charges or have been sentenced in connection with interaction with “extremist formations” and exercising freedom of expression, the Viasna Human Rights Centre reports.

As of Aug. 27, 2026, the number of political prisoners in Belarus stands at 889.
