At least 22 people have died in the mountains of Nepal following a devastating flood and landslide. Nearly 400 people are reported missing. Among those missing are 291 foreign tourists.
According to information from the Nepal Tourism Board, those missing include citizens of India, Australia, the United States, Malaysia, the United Kingdom and South Africa.
The Belarusian Foreign Ministry said it had no information about any Belarusian citizens affected in Nepal.
“The Embassy of Belarus in India, which is concurrently accredited to Nepal, has not received any information about Belarusian citizens who were injured or killed,” the Foreign Ministry said, adding that it is monitoring the situation.
The sudden flooding occurred on the Bhotekoshi River near the border with Tibet. Preliminary data indicate that the cause was a magnitude 4.4 earthquake in Tibet. It triggered a landslide that blocked the Lhende River, causing the Bhotekoshi River to overflow its banks. A glacial lake outburst is also being considered as a possible cause.
