Zelenskyy: Ukraine Will Respond Symmetrically to Russian Strikes

Russia has violated the ceasefire declared by Ukraine for the second consecutive day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities demonstrate that Moscow is not seriously considering the possibility of a ceasefire, Zelenskyy stressed.

“Significant damage to civilian infrastructure has been recorded in the Kharkiv, Sumy, Donetsk, and Kherson regions. There were also strikes on locomotives and Ukrzaliznytsia infrastructure in several regions. Ukrainian energy infrastructure remains a constant Russian target.

All of this indicates that Russia is not seriously considering the possibility of a ceasefire, and the only thing that continues to concern the Russian leadership is short-term silence on Red Square. Russia continues killing people and is completely inadequately concerned only with a few hours of silence in one part of Moscow,” Zelenskyy said in an address on May 7.

Zelenskyy warned that Ukraine would act symmetrically and called for concrete steps to end the war.

“We proposed silence from midnight on May 6. Yesterday and today this regime has been violated by Russia. In a mirror response and in reply to Russian strikes — our long-range sanctions; in response to Russia’s readiness to move toward diplomacy, we will follow the diplomatic path.

Concrete steps are needed to end the war, and peace will still be achieved: we are working toward this. The only question is how much time will be lost because of Russia’s madness,” the Ukrainian president said.

It should be recalled that Russia’s Defense Ministry unilaterally declared a ceasefire for May 8-9 and threatened strikes on Kyiv in the event of disruption to May 9 celebrations. Ukraine declared a silence regime starting May 6 and warned that it would act symmetrically.
