Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking at the European Political Community summit, called for continued pressure on Russia to end its war against Ukraine and referred to drones over Red Square.
“Russia’s war against Ukraine and Europe continues as harshly as before. And this summer Putin will decide what to do next: escalate the war or move to diplomacy — and we must push him toward diplomacy. Russia has announced a May 9 parade in Moscow without military equipment. And if that happens, it will be the first time in many, many years that they cannot afford military hardware and fear that drones could fly over Red Square. This is telling. It shows they are not strong right now. That is why we must continue to apply pressure through sanctions”, he said.
Last week, a phone call took place between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. During the conversation, Putin said he was ready to declare a ceasefire “for the period of Victory Day celebrations”. Zelenskyy subsequently instructed his team to clarify the details of the ceasefire with the United States. The Kremlin later said the ceasefire could last one day. A parade is scheduled to take place in Moscow on May 9, attended by guests of Putin, including Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Robert Fico.
Zelenskyy also thanked the European Union for its 20th sanctions package, particularly measures targeting Russian oil.
“We must continue this pressure. We must push Russia toward diplomacy. Please oppose any proposals to ease sanctions — this is important — and thank you also to those who are combating Russia’s shadow oil fleet”, he said.
The Ukrainian president called on European leaders to continue military support for the country within the PURL mechanism.
