The attacker remains in critical condition. This was announced on November 8 by Małopolska Voivode Krzysztof Jan Klęczar at a briefing.

According to him, 16 victims, including two police officers, are being treated at six hospitals in Kraków. Medical teams were performing operations until late at night.

“Everyone who was taken to hospital yesterday and underwent surgery until late at night survived,” the voivode said.

The condition of the two wounded police officers remains serious. One has regained consciousness, while the other is in a coma. They are being treated at separate hospitals in Kraków.

“Given how many weapons were still in the perpetrator’s car, had it not been for the swift and selfless intervention of these two young men, the number of victims could have been significantly higher. Their service pistols, which they were carrying and used properly, as they were supposed to, made a difference,” Klęczar noted.

One of the injured police officers, Jakub Kulik, lost a large amount of blood. A blood donation drive has been organized for him, seeking donors with AB Rh-positive blood. The voivode stressed, however, that hospitals are not facing a blood shortage.

The suspect himself has undergone several operations. Doctors describe his condition as critical.

Among those killed were three Polish women aged 47, 53 and 61; a 32-year-old British man; a 51-year-old foreign woman whose citizenship has not yet been disclosed; and a Polish man aged around 50.

Six hospitals in Małopolska Voivodeship are treating 11 Polish citizens, including the suspect, and five foreigners. The condition of 14 patients has stabilized.

The voivode denied reports that the attacker had served in the Polish army or was connected with the Territorial Defence Forces. According to him, the Polish Ministry of National Defence conducted a relevant investigation.

He confirmed that the suspect’s father legally owned firearms. The suspect also had a weapon.

Klęczar outlined the timeline of the emergency services’ response. The first call reporting the shooting was received on November 7 at 15:00:15. The emergency notification centre received around 40 reports in total.

“Less than two minutes later, the municipal police arrived at the scene. Less than three minutes later, the first police patrol arrived, while 30 police units had been dispatched. All 30 patrols were immediately assigned to the operation. Within three minutes, the first patrol began active intervention. A shootout broke out. Two young police officers then pursued the victim. They eventually wounded and arrested him, while also sustaining injuries themselves. Three minutes later, the police arrived at the scene. Four minutes later, the first rescue teams and ambulance crews arrived. Six minutes later — or, more precisely, five minutes later, since firefighters from Rescue and Firefighting Unit No. 1 were already at the scene at 15:06 — they began securing the police operation and providing first aid,” he said.

A total of 1,146 police officers and 62 firefighting and rescue personnel were involved in the operation.

The voivode noted that two staff members from the university hospital were also at the scene, providing assistance to the victims.

“This undoubtedly improved the situation and increased their chances of survival,” he stressed.

Kraków’s Main Market Square remains closed. Investigative work is continuing at the scene, with seven prosecutors involved. It is not yet known when the square will reopen.

As previously reported, on November 7, an armed 24-year-old man opened fire on people at Kraków’s Main Market Square. He then tried to flee by car and fired at police officers during the pursuit. Police officers wounded and arrested the attacker. Six people were killed in the attack. Another 16 people, including the attacker and two police officers, were hospitalized.

Later, the bodies of the suspect’s parents and sister were found in the family’s apartment in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski. According to preliminary police information, they died from gunshot wounds.

All the victims of the mass shooting in Kraków who were taken to hospital the previous day survived the night.
