Karach, are also a particular cause for concern. According to the State Security Department, the institution creates favourable conditions for individuals cooperating with the intelligence services of hostile countries to enter Lithuania and legalise their status there.

Since this organisation has been designated extremist in Belarus, this status artificially creates favourable conditions for individuals associated with it who do not meet the criteria for international protection to obtain residence permits in Lithuania after arriving from Belarus. The State Security Department also points out that this arrangement facilitates the abuse of the right to international protection,” the ministry said in a statement expanding on an earlier statement by Interior Minister Martynas Katelinas.

Earlier today, Lithuania’s interior minister, Martynas Katelinas, said the ministry would ask law enforcement agencies to conduct another review of Volha Karach and her organisation.

In 2023, Lithuania’s Migration Department, which operates under the Interior Ministry, denied Karach international protection, citing an assessment by the country’s State Security Department, which considered the activist a threat to national security.

“According to the State Security Department, V. The State Security Department’s conclusion that the applicant poses a threat to national security is well-founded and based on facts’,” the Lithuanian Interior Ministry said in a press release.

The statement also says that the Migration Department will have to check whether Karach and other individuals who have been denied asylum hold citizenship of another country or have the option of travelling to a third safe country.

After receiving all the assessments, the Interior Ministry will decide on measures concerning individuals who pose a threat to national security, as well as possible systemic solutions.

Lithuania’s Interior Ministry’s concerns about Volha Karach and her organisation Our House may be linked to assistance in legalising individuals who cooperate with foreign intelligence services.
