The country\u2019s Interior Minister <strong>Martynas Katelinas<\/strong> has asked Defence Minister <strong>Robertas Kaunas<\/strong> to approve the extension, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delfi.lt\/ru\/news\/politics\/glava-mvd-litvy-obratilsya-k-kaunasu-s-prosboy-o-prodlenii-usilennoy-ohrany-granicy-s-kaliningradom-120318912\">Delfi reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYesterday, I asked the defence minister to extend enhanced border protection and involve military personnel in it,\u201d<\/em> he told journalists on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>He believes a decision is expected soon. The army had previously been scheduled to take part in border protection until October 16.<\/p>\n<p>Lithuania currently plans to deploy up to 100 military personnel, although the exact number will be determined according to the needs of the border guard service.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFor now, the number remains the same as at present. It is not set in stone. The State Border Guard Service can see on the ground where personnel are needed and how many soldiers are required, and it discusses this with the Defence Ministry and the army. I think they will agree on the number of military personnel needed: 60, 80 or 100. Politicians are not the ones deciding what capacity is required,\u201d<\/em> the interior minister said.<\/p>\n<p>A week earlier, Lithuanian Defence Minister <strong>Robertas Kaunas<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/reform.news\/en\/lithuania-strengthens-border-with-kaliningrad-region-after-incident-on-latvia-belarus-border-and-reports-of-mobilization-in-russia\">decided to strengthen protection of the border with the Kaliningrad Region with the involvement of the army<\/a>. The measures were introduced in response to an incident on the Latvia-Belarus border, where a <a href=\"https:\/\/reform.news\/en\/latvia-reports-provocation-armed-masked-men-herd-migrants-toward-border\">group of migrants accompanied by armed individuals attempted to cross the border illegally<\/a>.
