This time, he did so at a meeting with the prime ministers of EAEU member states, who arrived in Minsk to attend the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council. Among them was Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

Addressing the prime ministers, Lukashenka decided to support Vladimir Putin, who said yesterday at the Valdai Forum that the world had reached a decisive turning point in its development.

“The President of Russia was absolutely right yesterday when he said that we are at such a turning point. Even we ourselves do not understand today where we are or how serious this turning point is in the history of the development of human civilization,” Lukashenka said.

According to him, the economy is the most important thing in life.

“The main thing in life is the economy. Whatever happens, people still look at life primarily from an economic perspective—not just here; look at America, where a slight rise in gasoline prices causes a revolution, an uproar and so on. You are the most important people in your countries when it comes to the economy. God willing, everything you have planned will work out,” he told the prime ministers.

He mentioned that before the event, he had met separately with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, who told him about Russia’s economic plans for the next three years, with a particular focus on finance.

“These are remarkable plans. If things work out in Russia, we will all benefit—not only Belarus, but all of us across the post-Soviet space. God willing, Mikhail Vladimirovich, may this plan be implemented,” he said.

During the conversation, he also decided to comment on the war Russia is waging against Ukraine. Lukashenka noted that he and Putin might have different assessments of certain aspects of the war, but that he would never betray the Russian president.

“A few words so that you understand my position on the war in Ukraine. Vladimir Vladimirovich and I often discuss this topic. Our approaches are more measured because both he and I know what is happening on the battlefield. After all, we are ‘co-aggressors.’ We have one question—which we sometimes discuss jokingly: who is the bigger ‘aggressor,’ he or I?

Of course, I have certain particularities in my assessment of the conflict in Ukraine. I told President Putin openly that I have my own understanding of certain aspects of the conflict in Ukraine, but we will always remain committed to our common course. If you, the Russian leadership, make a decision, we will always stand with you, despite our differing understandings of what is happening there. We have never been traitors,” Lukashenka said.

He recalled that in the first days after the 2022 invasion, he had declared that he would not allow Russia to be shot in the back.

“We maintain and will continue to maintain this position. Whatever the cost of this statement to me—the West will start making a big issue of it now—we will stand with our brotherly people, building our common economic, political and other space. I consider this our common homeland, from Brest to Vladivostok.

If you want to join it, you are welcome. If you have other goals and areas of cooperation, that is your right—you are sovereign and independent states.

But Russia and we have defined a common homeland from Brest to Vladivostok, where two states exist. That is how things have turned out. Some things are good, some are bad, but we are trying not to lose what we inherited from previous generations. This is a philosophical question: think about what I have said; do not discard what benefits you today,” he said.

It should be recalled that on Tuesday, Lukashenka hosted Alexei Russkikh, governor of the Ulyanovsk Region. Assurances of loyalty to Russia as an ally were also made at that meeting. “You can see what betrayal leads to in Ukraine. We do not want to meet the same fate,” Lukashenka said three days ago.

Today, in the economic context, Lukashenka also touched on the subject of betrayal. He emphasized that EAEU partners could always count on him.

“You can always count on us. We will never betray our common interests. And we do not make statements lightly. No matter how difficult things may be, we will resolve our common problems. So I will say once again: this is my firm conviction—governments are having a difficult time today, and things are not easy for you. Be patient.

The world is changing very seriously right now. And what we have planned today may be impossible tomorrow because of changing conditions in our crazy world,” he said.

He emphasized that Minsk had never changed its policy and remained committed to the integration of the post-Soviet space.

“I want to assure you—and you will have nothing to reproach me for—we set our course a long time ago. We have always followed the same direction and have not changed our policy. We are committed to integration, above all of the post-Soviet space,” he said.

Addressing the prime ministers, Lukashenka did not miss the opportunity to use one of his favorite arguments.

“Do not lose what you have. Do not rush to walk away from it. Believe me, no one is waiting for us anywhere,” he said.

He emphasized that Belarus had preserved many industries from the Soviet era and had continued to develop.

“We know how to do many things. And all of this comes from Soviet times. Our economy is not the most powerful, but the technologies we possess are needed by most countries in the world today,” he said.

“We did not sever our roots from the time when the foundations of our economy were laid. That is why we have achieved some things in mechanical engineering, and there are no problems in construction—we produce everything we need, from cement and bricks to the latest technologies. And agriculture. This year, we plan to sell $10 billion worth of agricultural products. For Belarus, that is a good volume,” he continued.

Aliaksandr Lukashenka has made assurances of loyalty to the Russian Federation for the second time in a week.
