Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/b> commented on the incident aboard a flydubai flight, saying the aircraft\u2019s co-pilot had apparently attempted to crash the plane with its passengers on board after attacking the captain. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz<\/b> described the incident as an attempted jihadist terrorist attack, Channel 7 reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

According to Netanyahu, one pilot attacked the other and stabbed him during the flight as the aircraft approached Israel.<\/p>\n

\u201cCitizens of Israel, a very serious security incident occurred this morning on a flight from Dubai to Israel. Almost all the passengers on the flight were Israelis. During the flight, as they were approaching the country, one pilot stabbed the other pilot and apparently attempted to crash the plane with everyone on board,\u201d<\/i> the prime minister said.<\/p>\n

He said he had spoken with one of the Israeli passengers on the flight and learned details of the dramatic events that unfolded during the incident. According to the passenger, the aircraft entered a spin and began descending sharply. In approximately one minute, the plane lost about 14,000 feet in altitude. The passenger and a crew member managed to enter the cockpit and subdue the attacker as he was allegedly attempting to damage the aircraft\u2019s systems, according to the prime minister.<\/p>\n

Netanyahu said that another flight crew member on board subsequently entered the cockpit and managed to stabilise the aircraft.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey saved many lives and prevented a major disaster,\u201d<\/i> the prime minister said.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred on the morning of September 30 aboard flydubai flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv<\/a>. During the incident, the crew issued an emergency signal used to report unlawful interference with aircraft operations. Israel subsequently scrambled fighter jets and held emergency meetings.<\/p>\n

The aircraft landed in Saudi Arabia, where the attacker was detained. flydubai later sent another aircraft to Saudi Arabia to transport the Israeli passengers to Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n

Israel Katz said the incident was \u201can attempted jihadist terrorist attack\u201d<\/i>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe serious incident aboard flydubai was an attempted jihadist terrorist attack that was prevented only thanks to the heroism of several Israeli passengers who stormed the cockpit, overpowered the terrorist and personally restored control of the aircraft to another flight crew on board.
