The work began following a wave of outrage among local residents and the wider public over the destruction of the previous artwork.<\/p>\n<p>This spring, during major renovations and insulation work on the building, the end wall facing the street named after the writer was covered with an insulating cladding. The well-known black-and-white mural by Orsha artist <strong>Dzmitry<\/strong> <strong>Talkachou<\/strong>, created to mark Karatkevich\u2019s 90th birthday, disappeared along with it. The loss of one of the city\u2019s main landmarks, cherished by local residents and tourists, sparked a strong reaction in online communities and regional media, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/vicspring\">Vitsyebsk Spring<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_582580\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-582580\" style=\"width: 432px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-582580 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/reform.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/karatkevich.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"432\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/reform.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/karatkevich.jpg 432w, https:\/\/reform.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/karatkevich-237x300.jpg 237w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 432px) 100vw, 432px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-582580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The mural created by Dzmitry Talkachou after it was painted over. The work is expected to be completed by November 26, the 96th anniversary of the writer\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n<p>The artwork is being restored by artist <strong>Liubou Rabeka<\/strong> of the Shakola art creative association. Unlike the original graphic design, the new portrait of Uladzimir Karatkevich will be in color and set against a natural landscape. The wall will also once again feature the famous line from his work: <i>\u201cI Was. I Am. I Will Be.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Over the past year, Filipau has curated and hosted the educational project \u201cLet\u2019s Meet by the Clock.\u201d It held around 20 events at six different venues, including the A. S. Pushkin Minsk Regional Library. The creative gatherings focused on Minsk\u2019s history, urban culture and legends, and featured well-known Belarusian researchers and local historians.<\/p>\n<p>Among the canceled events was a meeting titled \u201cMinsk in Photographs from Different Eras\u201d with local historian and Belarusian Union of Artists member Dzmitry Masliy.<\/p>\n<p>Censorship and bans on in-person appearances by independent cultural figures remain among the tools used to exert pressure on Belarus\u2019s cultural sphere.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new mural dedicated to Uladzimir Karatkevich is being painted on the wall of No. 2 Marata Street in Orsha.
