Companies linked to former Polish intelligence officers may be interested in importing Belarusian potash fertilizers, journalist Onet<\/a> Witold Jurasz<\/strong> writes. He previously served as a diplomat at Poland\u2019s embassies in Belarus and Russia and for a time headed the Polish diplomatic mission in Minsk as charg\u00e9 d\u2019affaires.<\/p>\n

In an article published today, he analyzes the meeting between the foreign ministers of Poland and Belarus, Rados\u0142aw Sikorski<\/strong> and Maksim Ryzhankou<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

He draws attention to a statement by Deputy Minister-Coordinator of the Special Services Rados\u0142aw Kujawa<\/strong>, who said in a recent interview that dialogue between Warsaw and Minsk could involve mutual security assurances. Jurasz argues that Belarus has been unable to provide Poland with any security guarantees, at least since Russia\u2019s 2022 aggression against Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The author believes that Poland\u2019s eastern policy under the government of Donald Tusk<\/strong> is now being conducted by the Polish intelligence services, which have clearly managed to impose their point of view.<\/p>\n

Jurasz writes that, according to Onet, Polish-Belarusian talks also took place at the Foreign Ministry, but were conducted by people who had not worked in either Belarus or Russia. During the previous thaw in relations between Warsaw and Minsk, they had opposed such a reset. The author compares them to Donald Trump\u2019s envoys Jared Kushner<\/strong> and Steve Witkoff<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Jurasz suggests that the current changes in Poland\u2019s policy toward Belarus may have been instigated by the United States.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne can seek a reset in relations that benefits Russia, or one that runs counter to its interests. The Americans are pursuing the first option. Under the Trump administration, the United States, while pursuing a policy focused on Belarus, is not even trying to wrest Belarus from Vladimir Putin\u2019s<\/strong> control. And even if it were trying to do so, our interests in this regard would conflict with those of the United States, and blindly following the wishes of the US administration is simply incompatible with Poland\u2019s political objectives,\u201d<\/em> he believes.<\/p>\n

He says it is possible that the US administration promised the Poles something in exchange for this service\u2014for example, agreeing to leave Minsk in Moscow\u2019s sphere of influence in return for the deployment of a permanent US military base in Poland. Jurasz is concerned that the Polish authorities are rushing the matter, while the US side has yet to be particularly specific about a decision on the military base. For example, a visit to the United States by Defence Minister W\u0142adys\u0142aw Kosiniak-Kamysz<\/strong>, during which details on the deployment of troops might have emerged, was recently postponed at the Pentagon\u2019s initiative.<\/p>\n

Witold Jurasz also writes that the issue has another dimension: potash fertilizers.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to Onet, companies linked to individuals with backgrounds in the Polish intelligence services are interested in importing them into Poland.<\/em><\/p>\n

Of course, one might assume that the emergence of information about these companies and their business plans involving Belarus, and the fact that the Polish services\u2014as opposed, for example, to the Foreign Ministry\u2014were pushing for a reset in relations with Belarus, are coincidental.<\/em><\/p>\n

Given the strange tendency of Polish intelligence officers to put their own interests above those of the state, it is extremely difficult to believe this is a coincidence,\u201d<\/em> the columnist concludes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
