Belarusian and Swedish playwright, writer, director and translator Dzmitry Plaks<\/strong> has received the Honorary Prize (Hederspriset) as part of the prestigious Bennypriset 2026 theatre award.<\/p>\n

Dzmitry Plaks currently serves as artistic director of the Dramaten.doc project at Sweden\u2019s Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten) in Stockholm. The main prize went to lighting designer Sofie Gynning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In its official decision, the jury highly praised Plaks\u2019 decades-long contribution to the development of Swedish performing arts:<\/p>\n

\u201cFor three decades, as a playwright, writer and director, he has broadened the perspectives of Swedish performing arts \u2014 first at Radioteatern and now as the outstanding artistic director of Dramaten.Doc. With one ear tuned to the present and the other to the theatre\u2019s unique ability to embody humanity\u2019s painful points, he uncompromisingly gives space to voices that need to be heard and to contemporary experiences. When Swedish theatre sometimes seems caught up in itself, he comes along and breaks down the doors to let in fresh air.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The Bennypriset theatre award was established in honor of Benny Fredriksson<\/strong> (1959\u20132018), a prominent Swedish actor, director and longtime head of Stockholm\u2019s Cultural Center and City Theatre (Kulturhuset Stadsteatern). Fredriksson was a legendary figure in the Swedish theatre world, known for his dedication to bold, contemporary and open art.<\/p>\n

The award is presented to theatre professionals for exceptional professional dedication, an innovative approach and the ability to expand the boundaries of the performing arts. The Honorary Prize (Hederspriset) recognizes creators who over a long period make a unique, strategic contribution to the development of theatre and take it beyond conventional formats.<\/p>\n

Dzmitry Plaks was born in Minsk and has lived and worked in Stockholm since the mid-1990s. He was the creator and producer of the Belarusian Service of Radio Sweden (2004-2009). He is a member of the Swedish Writers\u2019 Union, the Belarusian Writers\u2019 Union and the board of Swedish PEN. He is the author of poetry and prose books in Belarusian, Swedish and Russian, including \u201cThe Diary of Cy Twombly,\u201d \u201cPeter. Time\u201d and others. He has translated works by many prominent Swedish authors into Belarusian and Russian, including Astrid Lindgren, Tomas Transtr\u00f6mer and Stieg Larsson. In Stockholm, the artist developed his own form of stage performance, which he presents through the DRAMATEN.DOC<\/a> project \u2014 a series of performative readings about current events around the world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
