US President Donald Trump<\/strong> said he believed that Vladimir Putin<\/strong>, like Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/strong>, wanted the war to end. He made the remarks to reporters during his meeting with Zelenskyy in New York today on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.<\/p>\n

Asked whether he still believed Ukraine could regain all of its territory, Trump said the sides would \u201cmake a deal\u201d but did not elaborate on its terms.<\/p>\n

Trump said he believed the sides would reach an agreement but did not want to discuss what it would entail. He said the issue had been discussed extensively, including with President Putin, and that he believed something would happen. He also praised Ukrainians as very capable fighters and said they could be proud of themselves, describing their leadership as very capable.<\/p>\n

Asked about strikes on Russian oil-refining facilities and sites linked to diesel fuel production, Trump described them as a \u201cvery serious hit\u201d to Russia.<\/p>\n

Trump said the strikes were a serious blow to the Russians but also had a significant impact on diesel fuel prices, which had risen noticeably. He added that the issue would be discussed, while reiterating that the strikes represented a very serious blow to Russia.<\/p>\n

Journalists also asked Trump whether Putin would agree to travel to Miami for a G20 summit and take part in talks with him and Zelenskyy if the US president invited him.<\/p>\n

Trump said he did not know whether Putin would agree to come to Miami, noting that an important event would soon take place there. However, he said Putin would agree to a meeting, was ready for one and wanted the war to end. Trump added that he believed both sides wanted the war to end because many people were being killed and they did not want that.<\/p>\n

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the United States and Ukraine wanted the war to end before winter.<\/p>\n

He said the two sides had discussed possible de-escalation steps that could open the way to diplomacy.<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian leader thanked Donald Trump for the continued work by Ukrainian and US teams to launch production of Patriot interceptor missiles in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

He said this would help protect lives if Russia rejected negotiations and continued to rely on ballistic missile attacks against Ukrainians this winter and beyond.<\/p>\n
