Following a practice that has developed in recent years, Aliaksandr Lukashenka<\/strong> has a distinctive way of sending national holiday greetings to countries that Minsk considers unfriendly. In such cases, the greeting is addressed to the people of the country, while its leaders are ignored. Armenia has joined that group today.<\/p>\n

Lukashenka\u2019s press service reported that he \u201con behalf of the Belarusian people and himself personally congratulated the people of Armenia on their national holiday \u2014 Independence Day.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cThis landmark event \u2014 the 35th anniversary of gaining sovereignty \u2014 symbolizes the Armenian people\u2019s aspiration for free and independent development and the preservation of their rich culture,\u201d<\/i> the greeting says.<\/p>\n

The Belarusian ruler noted that \u201ctoday, when the world is facing serious challenges, time-tested friendly ties are becoming especially valuable.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cMinsk and Yerevan are united not only by common pages of history, but also by genuine sympathy between their peoples, which is a solid foundation for open and constructive partnership,\u201d<\/i> he stressed.<\/p>\n

Aliaksandr Lukashenka wished the people of Armenia stability and confidence in the future. \u201cMay harmony and joy reign in every home,\u201d<\/i> he added.<\/p>\n

Neither the president nor the prime minister of Armenia is mentioned in the greeting.<\/p>\n

As a reminder, Armenia recalled its ambassador Razmik Khumaryan<\/strong> for consultations in June 2024 following Lukashenka\u2019s remarks about the 44-day war between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Addressing Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev<\/strong>, he recalled their conversations before the outbreak of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh in autumn 2020.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought about it then, and recalled our conversation before the war, before your liberation war, when the two of us were philosophizing over lunch. At that time, we came to the conclusion that it was possible to win the war. This is important. It is very important to hold on to this victory,\u201d<\/i> Lukashenka said.<\/p>\n

He also said that Minsk was ready to help Azerbaijan rebuild the territories that had come under Baku\u2019s control.<\/p>\n

In Yerevan, his remarks were interpreted as confirmation that the Belarusian leader had known in advance about Azerbaijan\u2019s plans to launch a military operation and supported those plans. In his latest statement, Rubinyan made the accusation even more strongly, saying that Belarus and Azerbaijan had \u201cplanned\u201d the war together.<\/p>\n

Armenia recalled its ambassador to Yerevan for consultations on June 13, 2024. On the same day, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan<\/strong> announced that he would not travel to Belarus as long as Lukashenka remained in power.<\/p>\n

\u201cI declare that from now on I will never go to Belarus again as long as Aliaksandr Lukashenka is president there. And in general, no official representative of Armenia will visit Belarus,\u201d<\/i> Pashinyan said in parliament.<\/p>\n

He linked this position not only to Lukashenka\u2019s remarks, but also to Yerevan\u2019s grievances against the Collective Security Treaty Organization. Pashinyan accused the CSTO member states of failing to fulfill their obligations to ensure Armenia\u2019s security and effectively supporting Azerbaijan.<\/p>\n

In response, Belarus\u2019s Foreign Ministry recalled its ambassador to Armenia for consultations.
