This was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mfa.gov.lv\/lv\/jaunums\/baiba-braze-ar-asv-ipaso-sutni-parruna-drosibu-uz-latvijas-baltkrievijas-robezas\">stated<\/a> in a ministry press release following a meeting with U.S. President\u2019s Special Envoy <strong>John Coale<\/strong> in Riga on September 17.<\/p>\n<p>Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Bra\u017ee thanked the United States for supporting the security of Latvia and the Baltic states and highly valued the U.S. side\u2019s involvement in the release of Belarusian political prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>Bra\u017ee stressed that sanctions against the Belarusian regime must remain in place.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cAs long as the regime continues its repression of its citizens and threatens the security of neighboring countries, the international community must continue to exert pressure on Minsk,\u201d<\/i> the Latvian foreign minister said.<\/p>\n<p>Bra\u017ee briefed Trump on the situation at the Latvia-Belarus border and said that since the beginning of the year, Latvian border guards had prevented more than 11,000 attempts to cross the border illegally.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cThe Belarusian regime continues to use people as an instrument of pressure on Latvia and the European Union. This is not only a migration issue \u2014 it is part of Russia\u2019s military doctrine aimed at weakening the unity of allies, creating an additional burden on our country\u2019s border protection and threatening the security of the EU and NATO borders,\u201d<\/i> Bra\u017ee said.<\/p>\n<p>Latvia\u2019s Foreign Ministry stressed that the international community should increase pressure on the Belarusian regime as repression continues in Belarus and the authorities use illegal migration and other actions that threaten the security of Latvia and other countries.<\/p>\n<p>Latvian Prime Minister <strong>Andris Kulbergs<\/strong> also called for <a href=\"https:\/\/reform.news\/en\/latvian-prime-minister-tells-coale-sanctions-against-belarus-need-to-be-strengthened\">tougher sanctions against the Belarusian regime<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Coale also held talks with the Lithuanian leadership.
