{"id":576837,"date":"2026-09-15T17:49:20","date_gmt":"2026-09-15T14:49:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reform.news\/?p=576837"},"modified":"2026-09-15T20:52:59","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T17:52:59","slug":"five-years-in-prison-and-huge-fines-creators-of-bottle-warehouse-art-space-sentenced-in-barysau","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reform.news\/en\/five-years-in-prison-and-huge-fines-creators-of-bottle-warehouse-art-space-sentenced-in-barysau","title":{"rendered":"Five Years in Prison and Huge Fines: Creators of \u201cBottle Warehouse\u201d Art Space Sentenced in Barysau"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Belarus has handed down a harsh sentence in the case of the independent Barysau art space \u201cBottle Warehouse.\u201d On September 14, political prisoners <strong><b>Siarhei Salash<\/b><\/strong> and <strong><b>Dzmitry Babitski<\/b><\/strong> were each sentenced to five years in a maximum-security penal colony, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the prison terms, the court fined both men 800 base units (36,000 rubles) each and ordered them to pay back allegedly \u201ccriminally obtained income\u201d in a large amount.<\/p>\n<h3>Why Were Babitski and Salash Prosecuted?<\/h3>\n<p>The basis for the criminal prosecution was the activities of the Barysau art space \u201cBottle Warehouse,\u201d which the KGB designated as an \u201cextremist formation\u201d in early December 2025.<\/p>\n<p>According to human rights defenders:<\/p>\n<p>Siarhei Salash is a well-known public figure in Barysau. He previously took an active part in election campaigns and ran for parliament as an opposition candidate, but completely withdrew from politics in the 2010s, devoting himself to business and cultural projects. He was detained on November 12, 2025, and for a long time the security forces did not disclose the substance of the charges against him.<\/p>\n<p>Dzmitry Babitski was detained on December 12, 2025 \u2014 several days after the KGB added the \u201cBottle Warehouse\u201d initiative to its blacklist.<\/p>\n<p>Both defendants were held in pretrial detention for nine months before the verdict was handed down.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cBottle Warehouse\u201d case is another episode in the systematic destruction of independent cultural and civic infrastructure in Belarusian regions.
