{"id":568717,"date":"2026-08-17T18:05:04","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T15:05:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reform.news\/?p=568717"},"modified":"2026-08-17T19:39:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T16:39:38","slug":"head-of-lithuania-s-state-border-guard-service-resigns-after-migrant-incident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reform.news\/en\/head-of-lithuania-s-state-border-guard-service-resigns-after-migrant-incident","title":{"rendered":"Head of Lithuania\u2019s State Border Guard Service Resigns After Migrant Incident"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Head of Lithuania\u2019s State Border Guard Service (VSAT) <strong>Rustamas Liubajevas<\/strong>\u00a0has announced his resignation.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cI am convinced that, given the current situation, I must make the decision that will be most beneficial for the State Border Guard Service.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Responding to doubts expressed in the public space about the State Border Guard Service and feeling full responsibility for both the institution\u2019s successes and its failures, I have decided to step down from my position,\u201d<\/i> Liubajevas <a href=\"https:\/\/vsat.lrv.lt\/lt\/naujienos\/vsat-vadas-generolas-rustamas-liubajevas-traukiasi-is-pareigu-fX1\/\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the most important thing for him was stability within the system and the normal functioning of the service.<\/p>\n<p>The resignation came after an incident in which migrants attacked Lithuanian border guards.<\/p>\n<p>On July 26, border guards attempted to detain migrants who <a href=\"https:\/\/reform.news\/en\/group-of-migrants-attacks-lithuanian-border-guards-at-tunnel\">entered Lithuania through a tunnel<\/a>. However, another 20 people then emerged from the tunnel and freed their companions before fleeing into Belarus. It was later reported that the migrants had attempted to <a href=\"https:\/\/reform.news\/en\/migrants-tried-to-drag-lithuanian-border-guard-into-belarus-media-report\">drag a Lithuanian border guard into Belarus<\/a>. He managed to fight them off but was injured and taken to hospital.<\/p>\n<p>VSAT initially reported only the discovery of the tunnel.
