Democratic forces leader <b>Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya<\/b> told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/us-reports-delay-freeing-more-belarusian-prisoners-opposition-says-2026-06-09\/\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Her comments were the first public confirmation of a slowdown in negotiations being led by President Donald Trump\u2019s special envoy <b>John Coale<\/b>. As a result of those talks, Lukashenka has already released more than 400 prisoners. The Viasna Human Rights Center reports that nearly 870 people remain behind bars, including at least 170 whom the organization considers \u201cparticularly vulnerable\u201d because of their age, illnesses or harsh detention conditions.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Reuters, Tsikhanouskaya said the U.S. side had informed her that <i>\u201cthe next releases were postponed for a while,\u201d<\/i> but that she could not disclose the reasons for the decision.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cKnowing the reason, it doesn&#8217;t worry me. Of course, we want more people to be released as soon as possible, and any delay, it ruins health for many of them,\u201d<\/i> she said in English. <i>\u201cBut it&#8217;s \u200bnot the end of the process.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>She pointed to optimistic comments by Coale, who <a href=\"https:\/\/reform.news\/en\/we-are-not-finished-trump-envoy-responds-to-tsikhanouskaya-s-remarks-about-800-political-prisoners\">wrote on the social media platform X on June 3<\/a>: <i>\u201cWe are not finished. Keep hope alive!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Reuters requested comment from Coale and the Lukashenka administration.
