{"id":546711,"date":"2026-05-29T17:23:42","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T14:23:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reform.news\/?p=546711"},"modified":"2026-05-29T17:36:18","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T14:36:18","slug":"lukashenka-discusses-eaeu-statement-on-armenia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reform.news\/en\/lukashenka-discusses-eaeu-statement-on-armenia","title":{"rendered":"Lukashenka Discusses EAEU Statement on Armenia"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>A statement concerning Armenia\u2019s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) was signed following a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Astana. <b>Aliaksandr Lukashenka<\/b> shared details with journalists in Astana, BelTA <a href=\"https:\/\/belta.by\/president\/view\/lukashenko-rasskazal-podrobnosti-o-zajavlenii-eaes-po-pozitsii-armenii-783526-2026\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the issue was discussed during a closed session of the council.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cWe all stated that we do not want Armenia to leave our Eurasian Union. At the same time, as Vladimir Vladimirovich said in his remarks, we respect Armenia\u2019s choice. I added right there that we respect the choice of the Armenian people. If the people make such a decision and agree to leave the union they are currently part of and join the European Union at some point, we cannot oppose the will of the Armenian people,\u201d<\/i> he said.<\/p>\n<p>The statement also records support for the Armenian leadership\u2019s intention to hold a referendum on the issue.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cAnd then we added to the statement that we support the desire of Armenia\u2019s leadership, which has declared this intention, to hold a referendum on this issue,\u201d<\/i> Lukashenka added, saying that if the Armenian people decide against remaining in the EAEU, that decision will be accepted.<\/p>\n<p>In his view, the Armenian people should clearly understand <i>\u201cwhat they gain and what they lose.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cThe President of Russia has promised to explain this in detail to the international community, to anyone willing to listen,\u201d<\/i> Lukashenka said. <i>\u201cHe will once again explain in detail \u2014 Russian specialists have prepared this information for him \u2014 what it means to leave the Eurasian Union, of which Armenia is currently a member, and join the European Union.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Lukashenka also referred to the time frame for joining the European Union.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cConsidering Ukraine, which has long sought membership, and, even more importantly, considering Turkey, which has been waiting in line to join the European Union for, I believe, 25 or 30 years,\u201d<\/i> he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A statement concerning Armenia\u2019s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) was signed following a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Astana.
