A ceremony to raise the Belarusian white-red-white flag took place today outside the Lithuanian Seimas building. It was part of events marking the 108th anniversary of the Belarusian People’s Republic.<\/p>\n

“Today near the Lithuanian Seimas we are raising the white-red-white flag \u2014 a symbol of our freedom and resilience.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

This flag reminds us that there is another Belarus, one that is not Soviet and not Russian. That Belarusians are not the same as the regime. It unites Belarusians: both those in exile and those at home.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

Last week it flew in hundreds of cities around the world where Belarusians live.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

In Belarus today, such a thing is impossible to imagine. People are punished with years in prison for the flag, but I know that many secretly keep it at home. And there will come a moment when we raise it above our cities, and it returns to our streets”<\/i><\/em>, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya<\/b><\/strong> said at the ceremony.<\/p>\n

According to her office, the ceremony was also attended by Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas Juozas Olekas<\/b><\/strong>, Deputy Marshal of the Polish Senate Micha\u0142 Kami\u0144ski<\/b><\/strong>, members of the Seimas and representatives of the Belarusian diaspora.<\/p>\n

The ceremony began with a minute of silence in memory of those who gave their lives for a free Belarus.<\/p>\n

After the ceremony, a Belarusian-Lithuanian conference began in the Seimas.<\/p>\n
