At the Medininkai border checkpoint in Lithuania, officers inspecting a bus arriving from Belarus discovered a large amount of withdrawn cash marked with Soviet symbols in the suitcase of one of the passengers. The items included sickles and hammers, red five-pointed stars and other symbols of the USSR, the Lithuanian Customs press service reported.<\/p>\n

The passenger was denied entry into the country and was sent back to Belarus together with the suitcase containing the money.<\/p>\n

Under Lithuanian law, the distribution, use or public display of symbols of Nazi Germany, the USSR or the Lithuanian SSR is prohibited. This applies to signs that may promote the ideology of totalitarian regimes, aggression or crimes against humanity. Such goods cannot be declared or brought into Lithuania.<\/p>\n

\u201cSymbols of totalitarian regimes are not neutral historical attributes. These are signs associated with repression, deportations and war crimes,\u201d<\/i> Lithuanian Customs emphasized.<\/p>\n
