Hybridity is also a lens through which one can look at society,\u201d<\/em> Mikita Ilyinchik described his creative strategy. He has Polish roots and calls himself a \u201chybrid Pole,\u201d Polityka notes.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020 he graduated from the directing faculty of GITIS (the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts), where he also studied theatre studies. While still a student, he staged the productions \u201cDochki Lira\u201d and \u201cSmert Pazukhina\u201d in Russia, \u201cKaziny Vyspu\u201d in Brussels, and \u201cM\u201d based on the poetry of <strong>Valzhyna Mort<\/strong> at the OK16 centre in Minsk.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021 he joined the troupe of the Theatre on Bronnaya, where he achieved great success with Russia\u2019s first theatrical adaptation of Jonathan Littell\u2019s novel \u201cThe Kindly Ones.\u201d His second production \u2014 Chekhov\u2019s \u201cThe Cherry Orchard\u201d featuring a transgender actress as Ranevskaya \u2014 was not completed for reasons beyond his control.<\/p>\n<p>After Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, Mikita Ilyinchik moved to Poland, where he staged the production \u201cF***ing in Brussels\u201d at Teatr Polski Bydgoszcz and worked on creating the libretto for the opera \u201cMar\u00eda de Buenos Aires\u201d for the opera theatre in Warsaw.<\/p>\n<p>His plays \u201cThe Dark Room\u201d and \u201cSay Hello to Abdo\u201d won the International \u201cAurora\u201d Competition \u2014 the drama award of the city of Bydgoszcz.<\/p>\n<p>Mikita Ilyinchik staged the production \u201cPygmalion\u201d at the Teatr Polski w Poznaniu od 1875, based on the famous play by Shaw. In the new production, whose script the Belarusian playwright and director wrote together with Polish poet <strong>Andrzej B\u0142a\u017cewicz<\/strong>, the action takes place in a dystopian future: in Poland, raids and deportations of migrants continue, and to survive, the heroine must shed her Eastern accent.<\/p>\n<p>His most recent production featuring his dramaturgy, \u201cUn-packing\u201d (directed by <strong>Katarzyna Kalwat<\/strong>, Dramatic Theatre in Warsaw and Wroclaw Contemporary Theatre), is partly based on the reportage book \u201cThe Stones Were Meant to Fly: The Past of Podlasie\u201d by <strong>Aneta Prymaka-Oniszk<\/strong>. The book recounts the experiences of the Belarusian minority in the Sok\u00f3\u0142ka region during Sanation-era Poland, the war, and the post-war period \u2014 when Orthodox Belarusians were expelled to the \u201cSoviet Paradise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe Belarusian context has always been important to me. Both in Russia and here in Poland, all my characters are Belarusian. Even with Polish actors and in Polish theatres \u2014 they are still Belarusian characters,\u201d<\/em> Mikita Ilyinchik explained in one interview.<\/p>\n<p>Paszporty Polityki is a Polish cultural award presented by the weekly magazine Polityka since 1993.
