The creator of Warsaw’s “divers” has announced that he is leaving Poland. Belarusian artist Mihas Mishuk is moving to Germany and will no longer be able to paste and restore his divers on Warsaw’s walls. His latest large-format works have ended up in the Vistula and some of the capital’s bodies of water, and the artist hopes they will remain there until the spring flood.
Mihas Mishuk lived in Warsaw for three years. During that time, he pasted several hundred drawings of divers onto Warsaw’s walls. He even gained fans who joined together to collect and post photographs of his new drawings.
“Thank you, and we will miss you,” the deputy head of Warsaw’s Żoliborz district wrote in a comment under the news. The artist once placed one of his divers there and received a complimentary post from the district authorities, who were happy to welcome the curiosity.
Indeed, even in Polish-language Warsaw groups dedicated to city events, it is sometimes possible to come across new photographs of the divers. Residents are particularly fond of divers pulling a mermaid out of the water — a symbol of the capital.
All that remains for us is to envy the university city in Germany. But Mihas Mishuk is not saying goodbye to Warsaw’s residents: “Who knows, maybe I will return here someday,” he comments on his departure.
