Unlicensed 17-Year-Old Sentenced to 1.5 Years in Penal Colony Over Fatal Traffic Accident

A resident of the Dobrush district who caused a fatal traffic accident at the age of 17 has been sentenced to 1.5 years in prison. His father, the owner of the car, must pay 30,000 rubles in compensation to the victims, the Homiel regional prosecutor’s office reported.

The accident occurred during the night of June 1 on the Vetka–Dobrush–Tsiarekhauka–Russian border highway. The underage driver did not have a license and was transporting more passengers than permitted, none of whom were wearing seat belts. The car was traveling at a speed of at least 92.7 kph, while the maximum permitted speed was 90 kph. On a bend in the road, the vehicle veered onto the roadside and overturned.

One 19-year-old passenger died from her injuries at the scene, while another woman of the same age sustained less serious injuries.

The Dobrush District Court sentenced the driver to 1.5 years in a penal colony and banned him from driving for three years. His father, as the owner of the vehicle, must pay 30,000 rubles in compensation for moral damages to the injured woman and the mother of the deceased.
