Two Belarusians Arrested in Latvia on Suspicion of Cigarette Smuggling – Boxes Thrown From Train

Two Belarusian citizens – a train driver and his assistant – have been detained in Daugavpils on suspicion of smuggling a large consignment of cigarettes, Latvian police reported.

The men were detained on November 4 after authorities received information about the illegal circulation of excise goods. According to police, the driver and his assistant threw several boxes of cigarettes from a moving train travelling from Belarus to Daugavpils.

A total of 140,000 NZ Gold cigarettes bearing Belarusian excise stamps were seized.

A criminal case has been opened under the article covering smuggling committed by an organised group or on a large scale. On November 6, police intend to ask a court to remand both detainees in custody.
