Tusk Says Incident on Border with Russia May Have Been Prevented

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Polish border guards had probably prevented a provocation on the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad Region. Yesterday, the authorities announced the launch of a special operation in border regions to prevent possible incidents.

“For some time now, we have been receiving information from our own services, as well as from the services of our allies, that in the coming days, during the first half of November, there could be acts of sabotage or serious provocations on the border with the Russian Federation, or sabotage operations organised by hostile intelligence services,” Tusk said as he opened a government meeting.

He said he had also received similar warnings from NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Alexus Grynkewich, during the latter’s visit to Warsaw.

“Having received more specific information that incidents could occur in the first half of November, including an armed incursion into Polish territory, we decided to deploy substantial police forces to reinforce the Border Guard, including counter-terrorism units.

I sincerely want to thank everyone who has spent the past few days preparing for these alarming scenarios. Shortly after midnight, I received information from the Border Guard that suspicious movements had been observed on the Polish-Russian border. There, in the north, people were seen carrying flashlights. We promptly mobilised the relevant forces and resources and managed to prevent an attempted provocation, if that is indeed what it was. Obviously, we may never be able to establish this with complete certainty. However, according to the Border Guard’s assessment, the situation required the mobilisation of forces and on-site monitoring.

As I have already said, this tension, this escalation on Russia’s part, may continue. We cannot say that we have avoided any dramatic events today, but we must remain fully alert and mobilised to prevent potential acts of sabotage or provocations, not only at the border but also inside the country,” he said.
