Turchyn Expresses Cautious Optimism About Economy

Belarusian Prime Minister Aliaksandr Turchyn said he was cautiously optimistic about the state of the economy. At the same time, he acknowledged that a number of industrial enterprises are facing serious problems.

“In principle, the results of the first five months of the year, I would say, inspire cautious optimism. We have managed to move onto a path of growth, albeit modest growth. And our calculations show that this trajectory will continue”, he said after delivering a report to Aliaksandr Lukashenka.

Turchyn noted that industry is currently at the centre of the government’s attention and that the situation across the sector is uneven.

“So yes, absolutely, industry is probably the main focus of our attention and the attention of the government today. The situation in industry is also uneven.

There are enterprises that are performing quite successfully, while a number of others are experiencing problems.

But we must understand that today we are competing in global markets. There is no shortage of goods anywhere. We are competing with countries such as the People’s Republic of China. Therefore, all of this is difficult, but nevertheless, month after month we are seeing positive dynamics in production growth.

Overall, the situation in industry cannot satisfy us at present. But again, if these trends continue, and there is every reason to believe that they will, I think that within a few months we will also achieve positive dynamics in industry itself.

But I want to stress once again that the situation in industry is very uneven. Therefore, I would not say that there is a problem across the entire industrial sector. However, at certain enterprises we do have serious problems related to both objective and subjective factors”, he said.
