US President Donald Trump said he was not concerned that a potential deal with Belarus on potash fertiliser supplies could strengthen Russia’s position. He made the remarks during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
A journalist asked the US president whether he was concerned that proceeds from a potential deal with Belarus on potash could somehow strengthen Russia’s position on the world stage.
Trump replied that he was not concerned at all. He said Belarus had a large supply of potash fertilisers, while US farmers needed favourable prices. He added that the United States wanted to secure a lower price than the one offered by Canada, while continuing to work with Canada, and that Belarus would like to sell its potash at a significantly lower price.
The day before, Donald Trump said that the United States was working on a major deal to purchase potash from Belarus. According to him, US companies could buy Belarusian potash at a lower price than they currently pay for supplies from Canada.
