U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated John Coale to serve as his Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs, with the rank and status of ambassador.
Coale’s nomination was sent to the U.S. Senate for confirmation on September 28, the White House press office reported.
In November 2025, Trump appointed Coale as his special envoy to Belarus.
In recent interviews, Coale said that, in addition to securing the release of Belarusian political prisoners, he planned to work on the release of Russian political prisoners.
